Matthew 10:42
“And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.”
Context:This verse is part of a larger passage known as the "Commissioning of the Twelve Disciples" or the "Sending of the Twelve." In Matthew 10, Jesus selects and sends out his twelve disciples to proclaim the message of the kingdom of heaven. In verse 42, Jesus emphasizes the importance of showing hospitality and care to those who belong to the community of believers.
Let’s break down the verse to understand its meaning and significance:
"And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones…":Here, "these little ones" refers to the followers of Jesus, particularly those who are vulnerable or in need. It can include both children and adults who are new or weak in faith.
"…a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple…":Jesus highlights a simple act of kindness: giving someone a cup of cold water. This act may seem small and insignificant, but it carries great significance when done in the name of a disciple, implying that it is an act motivated by love for Jesus and following His example.
"…verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.":Jesus assures His disciples that even the smallest act of kindness will not go unnoticed or unrewarded. He promises that those who extend hospitality, care, and support to His followers will be blessed and receive a reward from God.
This verse teaches us several important lessons:
- The value of simple acts of kindness:Jesus emphasizes the significance of even the smallest acts of kindness and hospitality. We should not underestimate the impact of our actions, especially when they are done with a sincere heart and in service to others.
- The importance of caring for believers:Jesus places a special emphasis on caring for fellow believers. By extending love and support to other Christians, we demonstrate our commitment to the community of faith and embody the values of Christ.
- God’s recognition and reward:Jesus assures us that God sees and values every act of kindness done in His name. He promises a reward for those who faithfully serve others, reminding us that our actions have eternal significance.
In summary, Matthew 10:42 encourages us to practice hospitality and care for fellow believers, even through simple acts of kindness. By doing so, we not only reflect the character of Christ but also receive blessings and rewards from God.
