Matthew 10:41
“He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.”
Context:In this verse, Jesus is commissioning His disciples, sending them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and perform miracles. He instructs them about the challenges they may face and the rewards for those who receive them.
Receiving a prophet:Jesus speaks of receiving a prophet in the name of a prophet. Prophets were significant figures in the Old Testament, chosen by God to deliver His messages to the people. When Jesus mentions receiving a prophet, He refers to accepting and welcoming someone who speaks God’s word and represents Him.
Receiving a righteous man:Similarly, Jesus speaks of receiving a righteous man in the name of a righteous man. Righteousness refers to living in accordance with God’s standards and being morally upright. When Jesus mentions receiving a righteous man, He refers to accepting and welcoming someone who lives a righteous life and follows God’s commandments.
Rewards:Jesus assures that those who receive a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward. Similarly, those who receive a righteous man in the name of a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward. This indicates that there are blessings and rewards associated with welcoming and supporting God’s messengers and righteous individuals.
Spiritual rewards:The rewards Jesus speaks of are not necessarily material or earthly gains but rather spiritual blessings. By welcoming and receiving prophets and righteous individuals, we align ourselves with God’s purposes and demonstrate our faithfulness to Him. This can lead to spiritual growth, deeper understanding of God’s truth, and a closer relationship with Him.
Application:This verse encourages believers to have a receptive and welcoming attitude toward those who proclaim God’s truth and live righteous lives. When we embrace and support God’s messengers, we share in their ministry and receive spiritual rewards. This verse also highlights the importance of discernment in recognizing true prophets and righteous individuals who align with God’s Word.
- Hospitality and openness:Welcoming and receiving God’s messengers doesn’t just apply to ancient prophets but extends to all who faithfully teach and live out God’s truth today. By extending hospitality, respect, and support to those who serve God, we demonstrate our love for Him and contribute to the spread of His kingdom.
