Matthew 10:37

Listen to this article

“He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”

Priority of Love:Jesus emphasizes the primacy of love for Him over the love for family members. This statement may appear challenging, as love for family is often considered a fundamental aspect of our lives. However, Jesus is highlighting the need for undivided allegiance and wholehearted devotion to Him.

Discipleship’s Cost:Jesus’ call to follow Him is not a casual or convenient commitment. He demands complete loyalty and devotion from His disciples. The verse speaks of a radical shift in priorities, suggesting that even the closest relationships should not surpass the love and devotion a disciple has for Jesus.

The Worthiness of Discipleship:By stating that those who prioritise their family over Him are not worthy of Him, Jesus emphasises the significance of genuine discipleship. He desires disciples who recognise His supreme worth and are willing to forsake everything else to follow Him.

Intimacy with Christ:Loving Jesus above all else is not a call to neglect or disregard our family. Instead, it is an invitation to recognise that true fulfilment and purpose are found in a personal relationship with Him. When we love Jesus first, it transforms and enhances our other relationships, including those within our families.

Lessons for Today:This verse challenges us to evaluate our priorities. Are we placing Jesus above all else in our lives? It reminds us that our allegiance to Christ should surpass all other relationships and commitments. This doesn’t mean neglecting our families, but rather prioritising our love, obedience, and devotion to Jesus above all else.
