Matthew 10:38

Listen to this article

“Matthew 10:38 (KJV): And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.”

Context:In this verse, Jesus is speaking to His disciples, preparing them for their mission to preach the gospel and heal the sick. He warns them of the challenges they will face and emphasizes the importance of commitment and discipleship.

Symbolism of the Cross:The reference to “taking up the cross” carries symbolic meaning. In the context of Jesus’ time, the cross represented a cruel instrument of execution. However, Jesus uses it metaphorically to convey the concept of self-sacrifice, commitment, and a willingness to endure hardships for the sake of following Him.

Call to Discipleship:Jesus declares that anyone who does not take up their cross and follow Him is not worthy of Him. This statement emphasizes the high cost of discipleship. Jesus invites His followers to deny themselves, embrace a life of selflessness, and be willing to face persecution or even death for their faith.

Denial of Self:Taking up the cross implies a denial of one’s own desires, preferences, and ambitions in order to prioritise following Jesus wholeheartedly. It requires surrendering one’s will to God’s will and seeking His kingdom above all else (Matthew 6:33).

Commitment and Worthy Discipleship:By stating that those who do not take up the cross are not worthy of Him, Jesus highlights the significance of genuine commitment and wholehearted devotion. He expects His disciples to count the cost and be willing to sacrifice worldly comforts and personal agendas for the sake of the gospel.

Application:This verse challenges believers to evaluate their commitment to Jesus. It encourages self-reflection and prompts followers of Christ to examine whether they are willing to pay the price of discipleship, enduring hardships, facing opposition, and placing their complete trust in Him.

  • Overall, Matthew 10:38 emphasises the high cost of discipleship and the requirement for genuine commitment to follow Jesus. It reminds believers that their relationship with Him should take priority over personal desires, comfort, and worldly pursuits.
