Matthew 11:9

But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.

Matthew 11:9 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words to the crowds about John the Baptist. In the preceding verses, He asked what they went into the wilderness to see, contrasting John with a reed shaken by the wind or a man dressed in soft clothing. Now He confirms that John is indeed a prophet, yet declares him to be more than a prophet.

Jesus affirms John’s identity as a prophet, confirming that his mission was divinely appointed. The prophets of the Old Testament foretold the coming of the Messiah from a distance, but John received a unique privilege: he directly prepared the way for Jesus and pointed people to His arrival. This is why Jesus says John is more than a prophet. John stood at the turning point of redemptive history, serving as the forerunner who introduced the long-awaited Savior to Israel.

John’s preeminent status did not come from personal greatness but from the role God gave him. His humble position was exalted because of his part in God’s redemptive plan. The same expression appears in Luke 7:26, where Jesus makes the same declaration about John. The people themselves recognized John as a prophet (Matthew 21:26), yet Jesus elevates him beyond that category. By highlighting John’s identity, Jesus also points to His own identity as the Messiah, for John’s entire ministry centered on preparing the way for Him.

The prophecy quoted in Matthew 11:10, drawn from Malachi 3:1, explains why John is more than a prophet: he is the messenger sent before the Lord’s face to prepare His way. John fulfilled this Scripture in a way no other prophet did, standing as the direct link between the Old Testament promises and their fulfillment in Christ.

This verse calls us to discern and honor those whom God appoints to speak His truth. Just as the crowds went out to see John, we should recognize and respect faithful messengers who proclaim God’s Word, understanding that they play a significant role in His plan.

Each believer has a unique purpose in God’s kingdom. John’s distinctive ministry reminds us to embrace the roles God entrusts to us, whether large or small, knowing that our contributions matter in His overall purposes. Like John, we are called to point others to Jesus through our words, actions, and attitudes, directing them to the Savior and His redemptive work.

Most importantly, Matthew 11:9 ultimately points to Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah. As we reflect on John’s role, we are invited to deepen our understanding of Christ’s life and teaching and to respond to Him in faith, acknowledging Him as Lord and Savior.

John’s greatness lay in his willingness to decrease so that Christ might increase. His example challenges us to consider whether we are more concerned with our own recognition or with faithfully preparing the way for Jesus in the lives of others. The same Jesus whom John introduced still calls people to come and see who He is.
