Matthew 11:10

Listen to this article

“For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.”

Context:Matthew 11:10 is part of a passage where Jesus speaks to the crowds about John the Baptist. Prior to this verse, Jesus praises John and acknowledges him as the messenger who fulfills the prophecy found in Malachi 3:Jesus emphasizes John’s role as the forerunner, preparing the way for the Messiah’s coming.

Prophecy fulfilment:In this verse, Jesus refers to John the Baptist as the messenger who was foretold in the Old Testament. The phrase “Behold, I send my messenger before thy face” is a reference to Malachi 3:1, which states, “Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me.” Jesus affirms that John is the messenger sent by God to prepare the people for His own coming.

Preparation for Christ:The purpose of John the Baptist’s ministry was to prepare the people for the arrival of Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah. John preached a message of repentance and baptism, urging the people to turn away from their sins and prepare their hearts to receive the Savior. His ministry served as a spiritual awakening, calling people to recognise their need for salvation and to be ready for the Messiah’s arrival.

The significance of preparation:By mentioning John the Baptist and his role in preparing the way, Jesus emphasises the importance of spiritual readiness. Just as John prepared the people for Jesus, believers are called to prepare their hearts and lives to receive Him. This involves acknowledging our need for a Savior, repenting of our sins, and placing our faith in Jesus Christ.

Application:Matthew 11:10 reminds us of the vital role played by John the Baptist and his call for repentance and spiritual preparation. As followers of Jesus, we can apply this message by examining our own lives and ensuring that we are continually preparing our hearts for Christ. This involves regularly examining our motives, attitudes, and actions, and seeking to align them with the teachings and example of Jesus. Additionally, it encourages us to be messengers of God’s love and grace, preparing the hearts of others by sharing the good news of Jesus and inviting them into a relationship with Him.

  • Overall:Matthew 11:10 highlights the significance of John the Baptist’s role as the messenger sent to prepare the way for Jesus. It emphasises the importance of spiritual readiness and calls believers to continually prepare their hearts to receive Christ and share His message with others.
