Matthew 11:15

He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Matthew 11:15 (KJV)

Jesus speaks these words to the crowds after affirming John the Baptist’s role as the prophet and messenger who prepared the way for the Messiah. He has just explained that John is the Elijah who was to come, and He calls the people to grasp the significance of John’s ministry and message.

The phrase “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear” is a call to spiritual attentiveness, not merely physical hearing. Jesus often used this expression when His words were of great importance and not easily understood. It implies that not everyone who hears the message will truly grasp its meaning or respond to it. Spiritual insight requires an open and receptive heart, a willingness to receive and apply the teachings of Jesus.

This call also points to spiritual discernment. Jesus frequently spoke in parables and used metaphorical language to convey spiritual truths. Those with “ears to hear” are able to perceive and comprehend these deeper truths, moving beyond surface-level listening to genuine understanding.

The same call appears elsewhere in the Gospels, always at moments when Jesus delivers teaching that demands serious attention. Here, it specifically urges the crowd to believe that John was the Elijah spoken of by the prophets and to attend to that truth. The verse serves as a warning against a dismissive attitude and an invitation to embrace the truth being presented.

The second part of the verse, “let him hear,” implies a call to action. It encourages listeners not only to hear the message but also to internalize and apply it in their lives. Jesus urges His listeners to take His words seriously and respond with obedience, faith, and a willingness to follow His teachings.

  • Invitation to a Personal Encounter: Throughout the Gospels, Jesus frequently engaged in personal encounters with individuals and crowds. This verse serves as an invitation to engage with Jesus on a personal level, to truly hear His words, and to experience a transformative encounter with Him. It emphasizes the importance of an intimate relationship with Jesus, one characterized by active listening and obedience.

Matthew 11:15 underscores the importance of spiritual receptivity, discernment, and response. It urges individuals to actively engage with Jesus’ teachings, not only hearing but also applying them in their lives. It highlights the invitation to a personal encounter with Jesus and the transformative power of His words.

Consider how you hear the words of Jesus. Do you listen with the expectation that He is speaking directly to you, calling for a response? The verse invites you to examine your own heart and to ask for the spiritual ears to hear and obey what He reveals.
