Context

Jesus spoke these words to the crowds about John the Baptist, affirming John’s role and the significance of his ministry. Matthew 11 is part of a larger section where Jesus addresses the people’s response to John and to Himself.

Meaning

In this verse, Jesus refers to the Old Testament Scriptures. “The prophets” represents the prophetic books, while “the law” refers to the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, also known as the Books of Moses. Jesus acknowledges that all the prophets and the law spoke and prophesied until the time of John the Baptist.

John the Baptist was the last and greatest of the Old Testament prophets. He came as the forerunner to prepare the way for the Messiah, Jesus Christ. John’s ministry marked a significant turning point in God’s redemptive plan, as he pointed to the arrival of the long-awaited Messiah.
