Matthew 11:12

Listen to this article

“And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.”

This verse is part of a larger passage where Jesus is speaking to the crowd about the role of John the Baptist and the reception of the message of the kingdom of God. Let’s explore the verse and its meaning in context.

Historical Context:In the preceding verses, Jesus affirms that John the Baptist is the prophesied messenger who prepares the way for the Messiah. He speaks highly of John’s importance and his role in the fulfillment of prophecy. Jesus then contrasts the responses of the people of that time to John and Himself.

  • Meaning of the Verse:
  • “From the days of John the Baptist until now”:This phrase refers to the period of time that began with John the Baptist’s ministry and continued until the moment Jesus spoke these words. It signifies a specific time frame during which significant spiritual events were taking place.
  • “The kingdom of heaven suffereth violence”:This phrase has been interpreted in different ways. One possible interpretation is that it refers to the intense desire and eagerness with which people were seeking to enter the kingdom of heaven. Another interpretation is that it speaks of the opposition and resistance the kingdom of heaven was facing from religious leaders and others who rejected Jesus’ message.
  • “And the violent take it by force”:This statement can be understood in a couple of ways. One interpretation is that it refers to those who ardently seek to enter the kingdom of heaven, demonstrating a relentless pursuit and determination. Another interpretation suggests that it may indicate the forceful opposition faced by the kingdom of heaven, where people were striving to obstruct its progress and deny its message.
  • Overall Message:

The verse highlights the contrasting responses of people during the time of John the Baptist and Jesus’ ministry. Some were eagerly seeking to enter the kingdom of heaven, displaying great zeal and determination. On the other hand, there were also those who violently opposed the message and mission of Jesus and sought to hinder the advancement of God’s kingdom.

Application:

  • Eagerness and Determination:As believers today, we can learn from those who eagerly sought to enter the kingdom of heaven. We should be earnest in our pursuit of God’s kingdom, seeking His righteousness and desiring a closer relationship with Him.
  • Opposition and Resistance:This verse also reminds us that the kingdom of heaven can face opposition and resistance. As followers of Christ, we may encounter opposition to our faith or face challenges in sharing the message of the Gospel. Nevertheless, we should remain steadfast, knowing that the kingdom of God will ultimately prevail.

In summary, Matthew 11:12 speaks of the intense desire and eagerness of some to enter the kingdom of heaven, as well as the opposition faced by the kingdom of God. It encourages us to be earnest in our pursuit of God’s kingdom and to remain steadfast in the face of opposition.
