Matthew 16:3
And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?
Matthew 16:3 (KJV)
Context
Jesus spoke these words to the Pharisees and Sadducees, who had come to test Him by asking for a sign from heaven (Matthew 16:1). Despite the many miracles He had already performed, they demanded further proof, challenging His authority rather than honestly seeking truth. His reply exposes their spiritual condition.
Meaning
Jesus points to a common weather saying of the time: a red and lowering sky in the morning indicated foul weather. The people could read these natural signs accurately, yet they failed to discern the spiritual significance of the events unfolding around them. The phrase “signs of the times” refers to the evidence that the Messiah had come and that God was at work in their midst. Their ability to interpret the sky contrasted sharply with their blindness to the divine realities before them.
By calling them hypocrites, Jesus condemns their outward religiosity that masked a deeper lack of sincerity and understanding. They were skilled in superficial observations but willfully ignorant of the greater spiritual truths. Their focus on the color of the sky revealed a heart unwilling to accept the clear evidence of God’s work in Jesus’ ministry.
Application
For believers today, this passage is a call to cultivate spiritual discernment. It urges us to look beyond surface appearances and to seek wisdom from God to understand His will and the movements of His kingdom. We are invited to align ourselves with God’s purposes, avoiding the pitfall of judging solely by outward signs while missing the deeper spiritual realities.
Reflection
Consider how easily we can become preoccupied with the visible and the temporary, while neglecting the eternal significance of the present moment. Jesus’ rebuke challenges us to examine our own hearts and to ask whether we are truly discerning the signs of the times in which we live.
