Matthew 18:19

Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 18:19 (KJV)

This verse belongs to Jesus’ discourse on life within the community of believers. The immediate context is the preceding verse about binding and loosing, showing that the promise of agreement in prayer is connected to the church’s corporate decisions and spiritual authority.

Jesus emphasizes the power of agreement in prayer. When two or more believers come together and align their hearts and desires, asking for something in prayer, God promises to respond to their request. This verse highlights the effectiveness and importance of corporate prayer.

Jesus assures His disciples that if they agree on earth in prayer, the Father in heaven will respond and grant their request. This reveals the faithfulness of God to answer the prayers of His people when they unite in prayer and seek His will.

The verse does not suggest that any request made in agreement will automatically be granted. The agreement must be based on the will of God. True agreement in prayer involves seeking and aligning with God’s purposes and desires. When believers are in harmony with God’s will, their requests will align with His plans, and He will answer accordingly.

The phrase “Again I say unto you” links this promise to the preceding teaching, emphasizing that Jesus is addressing the disciples as a community, not isolated individuals. The agreement is on earth, highlighting the earthly context of the church’s prayer, while the answer comes from the Father in heaven, underscoring divine sovereignty. This promise must be understood within the broader biblical teaching on prayer, which includes praying in Jesus’ name and according to God’s will.

This verse underscores the significance of community and unity among believers. The context of Matthew 18 emphasizes resolving conflicts and promoting reconciliation within the Christian community. When believers are united, praying in agreement, it fosters a sense of togetherness and strengthens the body of Christ.

Jesus speaks with authority, stating that the Father will respond to their agreement in prayer. He reveals His divine authority as the Son of God and affirms His role as the mediator between God and humanity. Jesus assures His disciples that their prayers have a direct connection to the Father through Him.

Matthew 18:19 teaches the power and effectiveness of agreement in prayer among believers. When united in purpose and aligning their prayers with God’s will, God promises to respond and grant their requests. This verse also emphasizes the importance of community and unity within the body of Christ.
