Matthew 21:6

Posted on 18 May at 11:23

And the Disciples went, and did as Iesus commanded them, Matthew 21:6 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem recorded in Matthew 21:1‑11. Jesus sent two disciples ahead to a nearby village, instructing them to find a donkey and her colt tied there and to bring them to Him. The verse records the disciples’ obedience in carrying out those instructions.

Obedience to Jesus’ commands is highlighted here. The disciples did not question or hesitate; they went and did exactly as Jesus had instructed. Their immediate, faithful response demonstrates trust in Jesus and a willingness to obey without reservation.

The significance of the donkey and her colt is profound. Bringing them fulfilled the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, which speaks of a king coming “lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.” By riding on a donkey and colt, Jesus symbolically declared Himself the long‑awaited Messiah and King who would bring salvation.

These actions provide lessons on discipleship. As followers of Christ, we are called to listen attentively to His teachings and commands and to respond with immediate obedience. The disciples’ example urges us to trust in His wisdom and authority, knowing He leads us in the right way.

The passage also reminds us of God’s providential care. Jesus knew in advance that a donkey and her colt would be available for His purpose, demonstrating divine sovereignty and the ability to orchestrate events to fulfill His plans. This encourages believers to trust that God is aware of our needs and will provide what is necessary for us to fulfill our calling.

Application: Examine your own life as a disciple. Are you obedient to Jesus’ commands? Do you trust Him wholeheartedly and follow His instructions without hesitation? Are you attentive to His leading and willing to step out in faith when He calls you to action? Strive to be like the disciples—obedient, responsive, and reliant on His guidance and providence.

In summary, Matthew 21:6 teaches us about the disciples’ obedience to Jesus’ command during His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. It underscores the importance of obedience, the fulfillment of prophecy, and the lessons on discipleship and trusting in God’s providence.
