Psalm 106 is a psalm of Israel’s history, recounting the nation’s past and highlighting both their disobedience and God’s faithfulness. Verse 16 specifically addresses the Israelites’ envy toward Moses and Aaron while they were in the camp. To better understand this verse, the psalmist provides context by recalling various instances of rebellion, idol worship, and forgetfulness of God’s works throughout the wilderness journey after the deliverance from Egypt.

The envy mentioned refers to the rebellion recorded in Numbers 16, where Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and 250 leaders questioned the authority of Moses and Aaron. These leaders desired the same level of recognition and priesthood that Moses and Aaron possessed and accused them of exalting themselves above the congregation of the Lord. Their jealousy stemmed from a desire for greater influence, not from any ambition on the part of Moses or Aaron.

God had appointed Moses as the deliverer and mediator between Himself and the people, and Aaron as the high priest—“the saint of the LORD,” a title that reflects Aaron’s consecration and special role in the tabernacle. Despite the rebellion, Aaron remained set apart by God for service.

This verse serves as a reminder of the dangers of envy and discontentment. The Israelites’ envy led to rebellion against God‑established leadership and resulted in severe consequences, yet God demonstrated His faithfulness by affirming the leadership of Moses and Aaron through miraculous signs and judgments against the rebels.

Through this passage we learn the importance of honoring and respecting the leaders God has placed over us. It cautions us against allowing envy to breed discontentment and rebellion, urging believers to seek contentment, trust in God’s sovereign plan, and accept the roles He assigns within the community of faith.
