Matthew 23:3
All therefore whatsoeuer they bid you obserue, that obserue and doe, but doe not ye after their workes: for they say, and doe not. Matthew 23:3 (KJV)
Context: It is important to understand the setting in which Jesus spoke these words. In Matthew 23:1‑3 the Master first acknowledges the authority of the scribes and Pharisees, saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.” Immediately before verse 3 He rebukes them for hypocritical and oppressive practices—burdening people with heavy religious requirements, seeking honor and recognition, and neglecting justice, mercy, and faithfulness.
Obedience to the Law: Jesus affirms that the scribes and Pharisees have the right to interpret and teach the Law of Moses. He instructs the people to observe and do what they teach, because the Law is God’s guide for righteous living. Yet He cautions that their teachings must not be followed blindly in practice; believers are to obey the word, not merely imitate the outward deeds of those who teach it.
Hypocrisy: The passage highlights the stark contrast between the teachers’ spoken instructions and their personal conduct. Jesus warns against imitating behavior that is inconsistent with the proclaimed standard, condemning hypocrisy and urging His followers to pursue genuine righteousness and integrity rather than a false image of piety.
Discernment: This verse calls believers to exercise discernment and critical thinking. While the religious leaders may possess authority, their motives and actions must be evaluated. Jesus challenges His disciples and the crowd to distinguish between empty words and true obedience, testing everything against the standard of God’s Word.
Applying this verse today, several lessons emerge:
- Authority and Teaching – Value learning from those with sound knowledge of Scripture, but verify that their lives reflect their teaching.
- Hypocrisy – Guard against personal hypocrisy; live in harmony with the principles you profess.
- Discernment and Application – Develop a habit of testing doctrines and teachings against Scripture, seeking to understand and apply God’s truth in everyday life.
