Psalms 114:2

Listen to this article

Iudah was his sanctuarie: and Israel his dominion. Psalms 114:2 (KJV)

Context: This verse is from Psalm 114, which belongs to the book of Psalms, a collection of poetic and lyrical expressions of worship, praise, thanksgiving, and lament to God. Psalm 114 celebrates God’s deliverance of Israel from Egypt during the Exodus. In verse 1 the psalmist recalls how God led the Israelites out of Egypt, causing the sea to part and the Jordan River to turn back.

Then, in verse 2, the psalmist declares, “Judah was his sanctuary, and Israel his dominion.” The reference to Judah as God’s sanctuary points to the tribe of Judah, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. The term “sanctuary” implies a holy place, a dwelling for God, and in this context signifies that God’s presence was especially manifested among the people of Judah. This association is later linked to Jerusalem, the capital of Judah, where the tabernacle and later the temple became the central places of worship for the Israelites.

The phrase “Israel his dominion” underscores God’s sovereignty over the nation of Israel. It affirms that God chose Israel as His special people and established His authority and kingdom among them. Through mighty acts of deliverance—such as the parting of the Red Sea and the Jordan River turning back—God demonstrated His power over the forces of nature and affirmed His rule.

Overall, the verse highlights the unique covenant relationship between God and His people, particularly the tribe of Judah, and emphasizes the divine presence and authority within the sanctuary and dominion of God’s chosen nation. The psalmist uses this language to exalt God’s power and to encourage praise and worship for His mighty deeds in delivering Israel from bondage in Egypt.

As with any passage of Scripture, it is valuable to study the surrounding verses and consider the broader themes and teachings of the Bible to gain a comprehensive understanding of the text and its application.
