Matthew 24:19

And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!

Matthew 24:19 (KJV)

Matthew 24 is part of the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus speaks to His disciples about the signs of His coming and the end of the age. In this verse, He warns of the hardships that will occur before His return, specifically pronouncing a woe upon pregnant women and nursing mothers.

During Jesus’ time, pregnancy and caring for infants required special attention and care. The verse acknowledges the challenges and difficulties faced by these women in times of distress, especially when urgent flight would be necessary.

The phrase “those days” refers to the period of tribulation or the end times. Throughout Matthew 24, Jesus foretells events such as false prophets, wars, famines, and earthquakes that will occur before His return. The woe upon women with child and those giving suck is a lament over the tragic circumstances that will overtake them, not a pronouncement of guilt. It highlights the unique vulnerability of those who must care for infants during a time of great distress, making quick escape nearly impossible.

This woe is tied directly to the preceding warnings about the abomination of desolation and the need for urgent flight (Matthew 24:15-22). The practical hardship is evident: fleeing quickly would be nearly impossible for women with young children, making them especially exposed to the dangers of that time. This verse underscores the severity of the coming judgment and the reality that even the most innocent and necessary aspects of life, such as childbirth and nurturing, become sources of sorrow in times of divine visitation.

The verse reminds us that difficult circumstances may arise, but it is essential to remain steadfast in our faith. As believers, we are called to trust in God’s providence and seek His guidance and strength during trials, even when the challenges seem overwhelming.

The verse also highlights the importance of showing compassion and support to those who are vulnerable and in need. As the body of Christ, we are called to care for one another, especially during times of hardship. This includes providing practical assistance, emotional support, and prayer.

In challenging times, we can rely on God’s promises and trust that He will provide for our needs. Just as God cares for the sparrow and clothes the lilies of the field, He will also care for His children.

The reference to those who “give suck” can symbolize the need for spiritual nourishment during difficult times. It reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s Word, prayer, and fellowship with other believers to strengthen our faith and find sustenance for our souls.

Matthew 24:19 serves as a reminder that challenges and hardships are part of life, but as believers, we can find hope, strength, and support in Christ. It encourages us to endure, show compassion, trust in God’s provision, and seek spiritual nourishment during difficult seasons. Jesus’ acknowledgment of these women’s particular difficulties shows that He is not indifferent to human suffering, and His compassion extends to the most vulnerable among us.
