Matthew 24:18

Listen to this article

“Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.”

In this verse, Jesus is warning His followers about the urgency and swiftness of the events that will unfold during the end times. He advises those who are in the field working to not go back home to retrieve their belongings or outer garments before seeking safety.

To understand the significance of this verse, it’s helpful to consider the context in which Jesus spoke these words. In the preceding verses (Matthew 24:15-17), Jesus speaks about the “abomination of desolation” mentioned by the prophet Daniel (Daniel 9:27, 11:31, 12:11). This refers to a future event where the Antichrist will desecrate the temple in Jerusalem, signaling the beginning of great tribulation.

In Matthew 24:15, Jesus tells His disciples, “When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)” This verse alerts believers to be watchful and discerning, paying attention to the signs of the times and recognizing when the events Jesus prophesied are about to unfold.

In verse 16, Jesus further instructs, “Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains.” He advises those in the region of Judea to immediately seek refuge and escape to the mountains, indicating the urgency and the need to prioritize personal safety over material possessions.

Matthew 24:18 emphasizes the need for swift action without delay. Jesus specifically addresses someone working in the field, emphasizing that they should not go back to their home to retrieve their clothes. The idea behind this admonition is that when the signs of the end times become evident, it will be a time of great urgency, and people must prioritize their lives and their spiritual well-being over worldly possessions.

This verse encourages believers to be prepared, spiritually vigilant, and ready to respond swiftly when the signs of the end times become apparent. It also highlights the transitory nature of worldly possessions and emphasizes the eternal value of focusing on the kingdom of God.

Overall, Matthew 24:18 reminds us to be alert and spiritually prepared for the events leading up to Christ’s return, valuing eternal matters over temporary earthly possessions.
