Matthew 25:7

Listen to this article

“Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.”

Context:This verse is part of the parable of the ten virgins, which is found in Matthew 25:1-13.

Jesus tells this parable to illustrate the importance of being prepared for His second coming and the need for readiness and watchfulness in the Christian life.

In this particular verse, Jesus describes the moment when all ten virgins, who were waiting for the bridegroom’s arrival, arise and trim their lamps.

To understand the significance of this verse, let’s look at the broader context of the parable:

In the parable, ten virgins are waiting for the bridegroom to come and take them to the wedding feast.

Five of them are described as wise because they had oil in their lamps, while the other five are referred to as foolish because they did not have enough oil.

As the bridegroom delayed his arrival, all the virgins fell asleep.

At midnight, a cry is heard, announcing the arrival of the bridegroom.

The virgins woke up and began to prepare for his arrival.

They trimmed their lamps by removing the burnt wicks and adjusting the oil levels, ensuring that their lamps would burn brightly.

This verse signifies a crucial moment of preparation and action.

It portrays the response of all the virgins, both wise and foolish, as they become aware of the bridegroom’s imminent arrival.

It emphasizes that, at the sound of the cry, they all rise to attend to their lamps.

Symbolically, the lamps can represent the faith and spiritual readiness of the virgins.

Trimming the lamps can be understood as an act of self-examination, spiritual renewal, and preparation.

It signifies the importance of constantly assessing our own spiritual condition and ensuring that we are ready to meet the Lord when He returns.

The parable continues to highlight the contrast between the wise and foolish virgins.

The wise virgins had extra oil, symbolizing their preparedness and readiness for a longer wait.

Conversely, the foolish virgins, who did not have enough oil, had to go and buy more, missing the bridegroom’s arrival.

The parable concludes with a lesson about the importance of being watchful and ready for Christ’s return.

Jesus emphasizes the need for believers to be spiritually prepared, as we do not know the day or the hour when He will come.
