Matthew 25:33

Listen to this article

“And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.”

Context:Matthew 25:33 is part of Jesus’ teaching known as the parable of the sheep and the goats. This parable is found in Matthew 25:31-46 and is part of Jesus’ discourse about the final judgment.

1. Understanding the Parable:The parable of the sheep and the goats is a story Jesus used to illustrate the final judgment when He returns. In this parable, He pictures Himself as a shepherd separating the sheep from the goats. The sheep represent the righteous who have cared for others, while the goats represent the unrighteous who have neglected the needs of others.

2. Symbolism of the Right Hand and the Left:In the verse, Jesus says that He will set the sheep on His right hand and the goats on His left. In biblical culture, the right hand symbolises favour, blessing, and honour, while the left hand is associated with disfavour, judgment, and rejection. By placing the sheep on His right hand, Jesus is indicating that they will receive His favour and enter into eternal life, while the goats on the left will face His judgment and eternal punishment.

3. Sheep: Righteousness and Compassion:The sheep in the parable represent those who have lived lives characterised by righteousness, compassion, and love for others. They are the ones who have shown kindness, mercy, and generosity to those in need. Jesus identifies with the sheep and rewards them by saying, “Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 25:34). This emphasises the eternal reward awaiting those who have faithfully followed Jesus’ teachings and cared for others.

4. Goats: Neglect and Lack of Compassion:In contrast, the goats symbolise those who have neglected the needs of others and lacked compassion. They represent individuals who have been self-centred and indifferent to the suffering and struggles of those around them. Jesus says to the goats, “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41). This highlights the severe consequence of failing to show love and compassion to others.

5. Application:The parable of the sheep and the goats serves as a reminder of the importance of love, compassion, and service in the Christian life. It challenges believers to actively care for those in need, recognising that our actions toward others are ultimately a reflection of our relationship with Christ. It also emphasises the eternal consequences of our choices, highlighting the reality of a future judgment where we will give an account of how we have treated others.

  • – How can we practically demonstrate compassion and love to those in need around us?
  • – Are there any areas in our lives where we may be neglecting the needs of others?
  • – How does this parable impact our understanding of the final judgment and our responsibility as Christians?
