Matthew 25:34

Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

Matthew 25:34 (KJV)

Matthew 25:34 is part of the Olivet Discourse, where Jesus teaches about the final judgment through the parable commonly known as the “Parable of the Sheep and the Goats.” In this parable, Jesus describes how He will separate the righteous from the unrighteous when He comes in glory.

In this verse, the “King” refers to Jesus Christ, who is the righteous and just Judge. He is seated on His glorious throne, symbolizing His authority and sovereignty over all creation. Those on His “right hand” represent the righteous, blessed by God; in Jewish culture, the right hand was a place of honor and favor.

Jesus declares, “Come, ye blessed of my Father.” The blessing comes from the Father, indicating that God has chosen and favored these individuals. The righteous are invited to “inherit the kingdom,” which means receiving eternal life and entering into God’s kingdom, prepared for them since the foundation of the world. This signifies a future state of glory and joy in the presence of God.

The phrase “from the foundation of the world” highlights God’s eternal plan and sovereign purpose. Before the world was created, God had already prepared a place for His faithful followers. The word “inherit” suggests receiving what is rightfully given by the Father, not earned by human merit.

This verse is the opening of the King’s invitation to the blessed. The blessing itself is a gift of the Father’s grace, not a reward for human achievement.

  • God’s sovereignty: Jesus Christ, as the King, has the authority to judge and reward. He is the ultimate authority and sovereign over all creation.

  • Divine blessing: The righteous are described as “blessed of my Father.” Our blessings come from God, who graciously bestows His favor and goodness upon His children.

  • Eternal inheritance: Believers can look forward to inheriting the kingdom of God. This inheritance is not based on our own merits but on God’s grace and the righteousness we receive through faith in Jesus Christ.

  • God’s eternal plan: The phrase “from the foundation of the world” highlights God’s eternal plan and purpose. Our salvation was not an afterthought but part of God’s overarching plan since the beginning.

  • Future hope: Matthew 25:34 offers hope and encouragement to believers. It assures us that there is a glorious future awaiting those who faithfully follow Christ, and that our present actions have eternal significance.

Remember, studying the Bible in its entirety and exploring the context, surrounding verses, and themes will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the Scriptures.
