Matthew 25:20
“And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.”
Context:Matthew 25:14-30 contains the Parable of the Talents, which Jesus shared with his disciples. In this parable, a master entrusts his possessions to his servants before going on a journey. Each servant receives a different number of talents (a unit of currency). Upon the master’s return, the servants are to give an account of how they utilized the talents.
The Talents:In this verse, we see the servant who received five talents coming forward to report to the master. A talent was a significant sum of money, so the master’s trust in the servant was great. The servant joyfully declares that he has doubled the number of talents entrusted to him. He now presents ten talents to the master.
Faithfulness and Stewardship:This parable illustrates several key principles. One of them is faithfulness in stewardship. The master entrusted his possessions to his servants, signifying that God entrusts us with resources, abilities, and opportunities in our lives. The servants represent believers and followers of Christ who are accountable for utilizing these resources wisely.
Responsibility and Multiplication:The servant who received five talents recognized his responsibility and diligently worked to multiply what he was given. He didn’t hoard or waste the talents but put them to good use. His faithfulness resulted in doubling the initial amount. This teaches us the importance of using our God-given talents, time, and resources wisely, seeking to multiply them for the glory of God and the benefit of others.
Gratitude and Accountability:The servant’s response to the master is characterized by gratitude and a sense of accountability. He acknowledges that the talents were given to him by the master, recognizing that he was merely a steward of what belonged to someone else. This reminds us of our role as stewards of God’s blessings in our lives. We are accountable to God for how we use what He has entrusted to us.
Application:This verse challenges us to reflect on our own lives. What talents, abilities, and resources has God given us? How are we using them? Are we being faithful stewards who seek to multiply what we have been entrusted with? Are we grateful for God’s blessings and aware of our accountability to Him?
- Reward:In the subsequent verses of the parable, the master commends the servant for his faithfulness and rewards him by putting him in charge of many things and inviting him to enter into his joy. This points to the promise of rewards for those who are faithful stewards of what God has given them. While the focus is not on material wealth, the parable teaches that God rewards faithfulness with greater responsibility and blessings in His kingdom.
