Matthew 25:37

Listen to this article

“Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?”

Context:This verse is part of a parable known as the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats, which Jesus shares in Matthew 25:31-46.

In the preceding verses, Jesus speaks about separating the righteous (the sheep) from the unrighteous (the goats) based on their actions and treatment of others. In Matthew 25:37, the righteous are addressing Jesus as the “Lord” and expressing their confusion about when they saw Him in need.

The significance of this verse lies in the righteous people’s response, which reveals their selflessness and acts of kindness without any awareness of serving Jesus directly. It emphasizes the genuine character of their actions. They didn’t do good deeds for recognition or reward; rather, they served others with a pure heart.

This verse reminds us of the importance of our actions towards others, especially those who are less fortunate. It calls us to a life of compassion, generosity, and service to those in need. The righteous in this parable exhibit qualities such as empathy, selflessness, and a willingness to help others without expecting anything in return.

Furthermore, this verse teaches us that our acts of kindness towards others have a spiritual significance. In verses 40 and 45, Jesus explains that when we help someone in need, it is as if we are doing it for Him personally or neglecting Him. Jesus identifies Himself with the hungry, thirsty, naked, sick, and imprisoned, emphasizing that our love for others reflects our love for Him.

Therefore, Matthew 25:37 reminds us that we should serve and care for others as an expression of our love for God. It challenges us to examine our hearts and motives behind our actions, encouraging us to cultivate a genuine desire to help and bless others.

In conclusion, Matthew 25:37 teaches us about the importance of selfless service and genuine acts of kindness towards those in need. It reminds us that our actions towards others have a spiritual significance and that serving others is a way to express our love for God. May we be inspired by this verse to live lives of compassion, generosity, and love towards all people.
