Listen to this article

“For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.”

Context:Matthew 26:12 is part of the account of Jesus’ anointing at Bethany. A woman came to Jesus while He was at Simon the leper’s house and poured expensive ointment on His head. This act provoked a reaction from the disciples, who criticized the apparent waste of resources.

Symbolic Meaning:The woman’s action of pouring the expensive ointment on Jesus’ body holds symbolic significance. It was a foreshadowing of His burial, emphasizing His impending death and sacrifice for humanity. It also demonstrated her deep reverence and love for Jesus.

Extravagant Love:The woman’s act of pouring the costly ointment was an expression of extravagant love and devotion. The ointment was likely a valuable possession, representing a significant sacrifice on her part. Jesus recognized and commended her act, highlighting the importance of genuine love and devotion to God.

Understanding Jesus’ Upcoming Death:Jesus’ statement in verse 12 suggests that He understood His impending death and recognized the significance of the woman’s action in light of it. He acknowledged that she had anointed Him for His burial, indicating His awareness of the purpose and destiny that lay ahead.

A Contrast of Attitudes:The disciples’ reaction to the woman’s act revealed a contrasting attitude. They criticized her for what they perceived as a waste of resources, displaying a lack of understanding of Jesus’ mission and the depth of His impending sacrifice. Jesus used this situation to teach them the value of selfless love and devotion.

Lessons for Believers: Sacrificial Love: The woman’s act teaches us about the importance of sacrificial love and devotion in our relationship with Jesus. It challenges us to examine our own hearts and consider how willing we are to offer our best for Him.

b. Recognizing Christ’s Sacrifice: Jesus’ response reminds us to grasp the significance of His sacrifice for our sins. It prompts us to remember and appreciate the depth of His love and to respond with gratitude and adoration.

c. Proper Perspective on Material Possessions: The disciples’ reaction highlights the danger of placing too much emphasis on material possessions. It encourages us to evaluate our priorities and ensure that our hearts are focused on what truly matters in light of eternity.
