Matthew 26:19

Posted on 18 May at 14:49

“19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.”

This verse is a part of the narrative leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Let’s explore the context and meaning of this verse.

Context:Matthew 26:19 occurs during the last week of Jesus’ earthly ministry, specifically during the preparation for the Passover meal. Jesus and His disciples had gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate this important Jewish festival.

Passover:Passover was an annual Jewish feast commemorating the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. It was a time when families gathered to eat a special meal and remember God’s faithfulness. The Passover meal involved various rituals, including the sacrifice of a lamb and the consumption of unleavened bread and bitter herbs.

Jesus’ Appointment:In this verse, Jesus instructed His disciples to make the necessary preparations for the Passover meal. It highlights Jesus’ authority and leadership, as the disciples obeyed His instructions without hesitation.

Symbolic Significance:The Passover meal holds significant symbolism in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. The elements of the Passover meal foreshadowed the sacrifice that Jesus would make on the cross. The lamb sacrificed during the Passover represented Jesus, the “Lamb of God,” whose blood would be shed to save humanity from sin.

Obedience and Trust:Matthew 26:19 emphasizes the obedience and trust displayed by the disciples. They carried out Jesus’ instructions without question, which demonstrates their commitment to following Him and their willingness to fulfil their responsibilities.

  • Trusting in God’s Guidance:Like the disciples, we should learn to trust in God’s guidance and obey His instructions. Even when we may not fully understand the purpose or outcome, faithfulness and obedience to God’s Word should be our response.
  • Recognising Christ’s Sacrifice:Reflecting on the Passover meal, we can appreciate the profound significance of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Just as the blood of the lamb saved the Israelites from physical death, Jesus’ sacrifice offers salvation and eternal life to all who believe in Him.
  • Servant Leadership:Jesus’ appointment of His disciples to prepare the Passover meal also teaches us about servant leadership. Leaders should demonstrate humility, love, and a willingness to serve others, as Jesus exemplified.

In summary, Matthew 26:19 captures a pivotal moment in Jesus’ ministry where His disciples obediently prepared for the Passover meal. This verse reminds us of the significance of Jesus’ sacrifice and the importance of obedience and trust in our relationship with Him.
