Matthew 26:18

Posted on 18 May at 14:49

“And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples.”

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it’s essential to consider the broader context. Matthew 26 records the events leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion and includes the account of the Last Supper. In this verse, Jesus instructs His disciples to go into the city and prepare for the Passover meal.

Passover:Passover was a significant Jewish festival commemorating God’s deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. It involved the sacrificial offering of a lamb and the consumption of unleavened bread. Jesus, being a devout Jew, observed the Passover as prescribed by the Mosaic law.

The Master’s Instructions:In this verse, Jesus tells His disciples to find a particular man in the city and inform him that the “Master” (referring to Jesus Himself) desires to keep the Passover at his house with His disciples. Jesus took the initiative to make arrangements for the Passover meal, indicating His authority and divine purpose.

Fulfillment of Prophecy:Jesus’ choice to celebrate the Passover in this manner may have been intentional to fulfill Old Testament prophecies. The Passover lamb symbolized Jesus’ role as the Lamb of God, who would be sacrificed for the sins of humanity (John 1:29). By observing the Passover, Jesus established a connection between the Exodus story and His impending sacrifice.

Intimate Fellowship:By inviting His disciples to share the Passover meal with Him, Jesus demonstrates His desire for intimate fellowship with them. This event becomes even more significant as it forms the foundation for the institution of the Lord’s Supper, which represents the new covenant in His blood (Matthew 26:26-28).

  • Application:Matthew 26:18 challenges believers to reflect on their willingness to open their homes and lives to Jesus. Just as the man in the verse responded to Jesus’ request, we are called to invite Jesus into every aspect of our lives, giving Him the preeminent place. Additionally, the verse reminds us of the importance of partaking in the Lord’s Supper, which is a commemoration of Jesus’ sacrificial death and a reminder of His presence in our lives.
