Matthew 26:43

Posted on 18 May at 14:49

“And he came and found them asleep again: for their eyes were heavy.”

This verse is part of the account of Jesus’ agonizing prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, just before His betrayal and arrest. To understand the significance of this verse, let’s explore the context and the broader message conveyed in this passage.

In Matthew 26, Jesus, accompanied by His disciples, went to the Garden of Gethsemane following the Last Supper. Knowing the imminent events, Jesus was deeply distressed and burdened with the weight of the approaching crucifixion. He took Peter, James, and John, His closest disciples, with Him and asked them to keep watch while He prayed.

However, upon returning to them after His intense prayer, Jesus found them asleep once again. Their eyes were heavy, and they were unable to stay awake despite Jesus’ request to remain vigilant. This happened not just once but three times, as recorded in the subsequent verses.

This scene showcases the humanity of Jesus and the frailty of His disciples. Jesus, being fully God and fully human, experienced genuine human emotions and physical limitations. He was in anguish, and He desired the companionship and support of His disciples during this challenging time. Yet, they struggled to remain awake and failed to fully grasp the gravity of the moment.

The repeated sleeping of the disciples holds several lessons for us as well. Firstly, it demonstrates the weakness of human flesh. The disciples were physically exhausted, and their natural limitations made it difficult for them to stay awake. This reminds us of our own vulnerability and the need for reliance on God’s strength in times of spiritual battles and challenges.

Secondly, their inability to stay awake reveals the disciples’ lack of understanding and awareness of the significance of the events unfolding before them. Despite Jesus’ previous teachings and warnings about His impending suffering and death, the disciples failed to grasp the urgency and importance of the moment.

Moreover, Jesus’ disappointment with the disciples’ lack of watchfulness serves as a reminder for us to be spiritually alert and vigilant. In various other scriptures, Jesus emphasizes the importance of being spiritually awake and prepared for His return (e.g., Matthew 24:42-44, Mark 13:35-37). It encourages us to stay spiritually awake, prayerful, and watchful in our own lives, being aware of the signs of the times and the work God is doing around us.

In conclusion, Matthew 26:43 presents an episode from the Garden of Gethsemane, highlighting the disciples’ inability to stay awake while Jesus was in deep anguish. This passage reminds us of the frailty of human nature, the need for reliance on God’s strength, the importance of understanding the significance of spiritual events, and the call to be spiritually awake and watchful in our own lives.
