Listen to this article

“Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.”

This verse is part of the narrative of Jesus’ crucifixion and death. It occurs immediately after Jesus breathes his last on the cross. Let’s break down the verse and examine its significance:

The Centurion and His Companions:The centurion mentioned in this verse was a Roman soldier who was responsible for a hundred men. Along with his companions, they were assigned to watch over Jesus during his crucifixion.

Witnessing the Earthquake:As Jesus died, an earthquake occurred, which would have been a dramatic and awe-inspiring event. The centurion and those with him observed this powerful natural phenomenon.

The Fearful Reaction:Witnessing the earthquake and all that transpired during Jesus’ crucifixion had a profound impact on the centurion and his companions. They were overcome with fear. It is important to note that the fear mentioned here was not the terror associated with punishment, but rather a sense of awe and reverence.

Acknowledging Jesus as the Son of God:The centurion and his companions made a significant declaration in response to what they had witnessed. They proclaimed, “Truly this was the Son of God.” This statement reveals a recognition of Jesus’ divinity, acknowledging that he was more than just an ordinary man.

This verse captures a pivotal moment in the crucifixion account, where a Roman centurion and those with him, who were not part of Jesus’ followers, bore witness to the extraordinary events surrounding Jesus’ death and acknowledged his divine nature. Their response serves as a powerful testament to the truth of Jesus’ identity as the Son of God.

The centurion’s declaration also foreshadows the broader significance of Jesus’ death and resurrection. It hints at the eventual spread of the Gospel message to the Gentiles, as the Gentile centurion becomes one of the first non-Jewish individuals to openly acknowledge Jesus’ true identity.

Overall, Matthew 27:54 highlights the impact of Jesus’ crucifixion on those who witnessed it and emphasizes the divine nature of Jesus, as acknowledged by the centurion and his companions. It serves as a reminder of the profound impact of Jesus’ sacrifice and the universal significance of his death for all people, irrespective of their background.
