Matthew 27:53

Posted on 18 May at 14:18

“And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.”

Historical Background:At this point in the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus has been crucified and has died on the cross. In verse 51, it is recorded that the veil in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom, signifying the access to God through Jesus’ sacrifice. It is in this context that Matthew records the extraordinary event mentioned in verse 53.

The Resurrection of the Saints:Verse 53 describes an extraordinary occurrence that happened after Jesus’ resurrection. It states that some of the graves opened, and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. After their resurrection, they came out of the graves and appeared to many people in the holy city, which is believed to be Jerusalem.

The Significance:The resurrection of these holy people is a unique event mentioned only in the Gospel of Matthew. The purpose of including this event is not explicitly explained, but it serves several important theological purposes:

  • Confirmation of Jesus’ Power: The resurrection of these holy people after Jesus’ resurrection serves as a confirmation of the power and victory of Jesus over death. It demonstrates that Jesus’ resurrection was not an isolated event, but part of a larger work of redemption and the defeat of death itself.
  • Foreshadowing the General Resurrection: The resurrection of these holy people anticipates and foreshadows the future general resurrection of all believers. It points to the truth that through Jesus, believers will also experience resurrection and eternal life.
  • Witnesses of Christ’s Victory: By appearing to many people in the holy city, these resurrected saints became witnesses of Christ’s victory over death. Their appearance would have served as a powerful testimony to the reality of Jesus’ resurrection and the hope of eternal life.

Interpretation and Symbolism:The nature of this event raises some questions, such as who these holy people were and what happened to them after they appeared to others. The Bible does not provide detailed information about these individuals, and various interpretations exist. Some view this event as literal, while others see it as symbolic, representing the spiritual awakening of believers after Jesus’ resurrection.

Application:While the precise details of this event remain somewhat mysterious, there are essential lessons we can draw from this passage:

The Power of Christ:Matthew 27:53 highlights the power of Jesus Christ over death. It reminds us that Jesus’ resurrection is the cornerstone of our faith, and through Him, we have victory over sin and death. Hope in the Resurrection:The resurrection of these holy people points to the future hope of all believers. It encourages us to trust in the promise of our own resurrection and eternal life in Christ. Bearing Witness:Just as the resurrected saints appeared to others, we are called to be witnesses of Jesus’ victory and share the good news of salvation with others.

In summary:Matthew 27:53 portrays the extraordinary event of some holy people being raised to life and appearing to many in the holy city after Jesus’ resurrection. This event serves as a confirmation of Jesus’ power over death, foreshadows the general resurrection, and bears witness to the victory of Christ. It encourages believers to place their hope in the resurrection and to bear witness to the transformative power of Jesus’ sacrifice.
