Revelation 19:10

And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Context

The book of Revelation is a prophetic book containing visions and messages given to the Apostle John. In this verse, John, overwhelmed by the glory of the angelic messenger and the announcement of the marriage supper of the Lamb, falls at the angel’s feet to worship him.

Meaning

The angel immediately corrects John, saying, “See thou do it not.” This prohibition is a strong affirmation that even a holy angel is not worthy of worship. It emphasizes that worship belongs to God alone, not to any created being, however exalted. The angel identifies himself as John’s fellow servant and part of the brethren who have the testimony of Jesus, highlighting the unity between believers and angels as fellow servants in God’s redemptive plan.

The angel redirects John’s attention to God: “worship God.” Worship is an act of reverence, adoration, and surrender to the divine, recognizing God’s supremacy, worthiness, and authority. It is the essential response to God’s greatness and sovereignty.

The angel declares, “the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” This means that the essence and driving force of all true prophecy is the testimony about Jesus Christ. The testimony of Jesus refers to His life, death, resurrection, and teachings. Through Jesus, God’s redemptive plan is revealed and fulfilled, and prophecy finds its ultimate meaning.
