Revelation 19:9
And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.
Revelation 19:9 (KJV)
Context
This verse comes from the vision given to the apostle John in the book of Revelation. It follows the fall of Babylon the Great, the judgment of the great prostitute, and the rejoicing of the saints and the heavenly host. An angel commands John to write, showing that the message is important, certain, and meant to be remembered.
Meaning
The verse begins with the announcement, “Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb.” This phrase symbolizes the union between Christ, the Lamb, and His bride, the Church. The marriage supper is a future event that represents the ultimate fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan, where believers will enjoy a joyous celebration in the presence of the Lord.
The term “blessed” refers to the state of divine favour and happiness that comes from being called to participate in this supper. Those who respond to God’s invitation and have a personal relationship with Christ are blessed because they are partakers in the ultimate victory and eternal joy in the presence of God. True blessedness comes from being in a right relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ, and responding to His call leads to eternal blessings.
The second part of the verse, “These are the true sayings of God,” underscores the divine origin and reliability of the message. The overall testimony of Revelation affirms that its revelations are divinely inspired and will be fulfilled.
Biblical connections
The command to write echoes the angelic instruction in Revelation 1:1, where God sent His angel to show His servant John things that must shortly come to pass. The immediate context in Revelation 19:10 shows John falling at the angel’s feet to worship, but the angel redirects worship to God alone, reinforcing that the message comes from God and not from any creature.
Application
This verse reminds believers to take the prophecies and teachings of the book seriously, knowing that God’s promises are reliable. It encourages us to respond to God’s call and live according to His will, which ultimately leads to eternal blessings. The blessing pronounced on those called to this supper indicates that the invitation is a gracious act of God, and those who respond are blessed.
Reflection
Consider the certainty of God’s promises. The marriage supper of the Lamb is a future event, but its certainty is grounded in the truth of God’s word. As believers, we are called to live in the light of this promise, with hope and joy, knowing that our relationship with Christ will be fully realized in His presence.
