Matthew 27:64

Listen to this article

“Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.”

Context:Matthew 27:64 is a part of the narrative of Jesus’ crucifixion and burial. After Jesus was crucified and laid in the tomb, the chief priests and Pharisees approached Pilate, the Roman governor, expressing concern that Jesus’ disciples might steal his body and then claim that He had risen from the dead. They wanted Pilate to secure the tomb to prevent any deception.

Fulfillment of Prophecy:The statement made by the chief priests and Pharisees reflects their awareness of Jesus’ claim that He would rise from the dead after three days (Matthew 16:21). They feared that if His body went missing, the disciples would falsely declare His resurrection, causing greater turmoil among the people.

Unbelief and Opposition:The religious leaders’ response to Jesus’ teachings and miracles throughout His ministry was characterised by scepticism and opposition. Despite witnessing His powerful works, they rejected Him as the Messiah and sought to suppress His influence even after His death.

Irony and Unintended Confirmation:Interestingly, their concern about the disciples stealing Jesus’ body inadvertently supports the reality of His resurrection. The chief priests and Pharisees unwittingly acknowledged the possibility of a resurrection, thus inadvertently confirming the central claim of Christianity.

Failed Efforts to Halt the Gospel:The chief priests and Pharisees attempted to prevent the spread of the message of Jesus’ resurrection by securing the tomb. However, their efforts were in vain because Jesus did rise from the dead on the third day, just as He had foretold.

The Power of the Resurrection:The resurrection of Jesus is a foundational truth of the Christian faith. It validates His claims to be the Son of God, conquering sin and death, and providing salvation for all who believe in Him. The empty tomb stands as evidence of His victory over the grave and offers hope and eternal life to all who trust in Him.

The Importance of Truth:The concern expressed by the chief priests and Pharisees highlights the significance of truth and the consequences of deception. While they sought to perpetuate falsehood, the truth of Jesus’ resurrection eventually prevailed, leading to the transformation of countless lives throughout history.

In summary, Matthew 27:64 captures the fear and unbelief of the chief priests and Pharisees regarding the possibility of Jesus’ resurrection. Their attempt to secure the tomb inadvertently affirms the reality of His resurrection and underscores the power and truth of the Christian faith. The verse serves as a reminder of the importance of truth and the ultimate triumph of Jesus over death.
