Matthew 27:65
“Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.”
Context:Matthew 27:65 is part of the account of Jesus’ crucifixion and burial. Prior to this verse, Jesus had been crucified, and His body was placed in a tomb by Joseph of Arimathea. The religious leaders, concerned about the possibility of Jesus’ disciples stealing His body and claiming He had risen from the dead, approached Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, to request security measures.
Pilate’s response:In this verse, Pilate acknowledges their concern and grants them permission to secure the tomb by placing a guard. The “watch” referred to here is a group of Roman soldiers who would be responsible for guarding the tomb and ensuring that no one tampered with it.
Fulfillment of prophecy:The religious leaders’ request for a guard unwittingly fulfilled an ancient prophecy. In Matthew 27:64, they said to Pilate, “Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away.” This echoes Jesus’ own prediction of His resurrection after three days (Matthew 16:21). The presence of the guard would serve as further evidence of the supernatural nature of Jesus’ resurrection.
Divine irony:The religious leaders’ efforts to secure the tomb were ultimately in vain. Despite their intentions, Jesus did rise from the dead on the third day, triumphing over sin and death. The very measures taken to prevent His resurrection ended up becoming a confirmation of His victory and the fulfillment of His words.
Lessons for believers:Matthew 27:65 reminds us of the power and sovereignty of God. It shows how even human attempts to thwart God’s plans can end up serving His purposes. Additionally, it reinforces the truth of Jesus’ resurrection, a central tenet of the Christian faith. The fact that Jesus conquered death provides hope and assurance for believers, assuring them of the truth and validity of their faith.
Application:As believers, we can take comfort in the resurrection of Jesus. It serves as a reminder of His victory over sin and death and assures us of our own resurrection and eternal life in Him. The account of the guard at the tomb should strengthen our faith, knowing that God’s plans cannot be hindered and that He is in control, even in the face of opposition.
- In conclusion:Matthew 27:65 highlights the efforts made to secure Jesus’ tomb, fulfilling prophecy and ultimately validating His resurrection. It serves as a powerful reminder of God’s sovereignty, the truth of Jesus’ victory over death, and the hope and assurance we have as believers.
