Mark 3:34

Posted on 18 May at 14:48

“And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!”

Context:In Mark 3:34, Jesus is in the midst of a gathering, surrounded by a crowd of people. The verse begins by stating that Jesus looked around at those who sat about Him. This gathering included His disciples, as well as a multitude of people who were eager to hear Him speak and witness His miracles.

Family of Jesus:The latter part of Mark 3:34 contains an intriguing statement made by Jesus. He declares, “Behold my mother and my brethren!” This statement might initially seem surprising because it appears to downplay the significance of Jesus’ earthly family. However, Jesus is using this moment to convey a deeper spiritual truth.

A Spiritual Family:Jesus’ statement in Mark 3:34 emphasizes the importance of spiritual relationships. While Jesus had a biological mother, Mary, and siblings, He points to a broader concept of family beyond blood relations. Jesus is emphasizing the significance of belonging to His spiritual family, which is based on faith in Him and obedience to God’s will.

Inclusion and Discipleship:By saying, “Behold my mother and my brethren,” Jesus includes His disciples and those who follow Him in the realm of spiritual family. He implies that the bond formed by following Him and being obedient to God is even stronger than biological relationships. This highlights the transformative power of faith and discipleship, which can create a sense of unity and belonging.

Spiritual Adoption:Jesus’ statement in Mark 3:34 also indicates the possibility of spiritual adoption. Through faith in Jesus Christ, individuals can become part of God’s family. In John 1:12, it is written, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” This adoption into God’s family is made possible by Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection.

Overall, Mark 3:34 teaches us about the significance of spiritual relationships and belonging to God’s family through faith in Jesus Christ. It emphasizes that our connection to Jesus is not limited to earthly bonds but extends to a broader spiritual family where unity, love, and obedience to God are central. This verse encourages believers to prioritise their relationship with Jesus and find fellowship with other followers, forming a community rooted in faith.
