Mark 4:36

Posted on 18 May at 14:48

“And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.”

Context:Mark 4:36 is part of a larger passage known as the “Calming of the Storm” or “Jesus Stills the Storm,” which begins in verse 35. In this account, Jesus and His disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee in a boat when a great storm arose. While the disciples were filled with fear, Jesus rebuked the wind and the sea, bringing about a great calm.

Multitude sent away:Prior to this event, Jesus had been teaching a large crowd of people by the sea (Mark 4:1-2). After concluding His teaching, Jesus instructed His disciples to set sail, sending away the multitude. It is important to note that Jesus often sought moments of solitude and rest, away from the crowds, to spend time with His disciples and to commune with God the Father.

Other little ships:The verse mentions that there were other little ships with Jesus and His disciples. This detail indicates that Jesus was not the only one crossing the sea that day. Other people, possibly His followers or curious onlookers, chose to accompany Him by boarding other boats. The presence of these other ships adds to the significance of the event, as it demonstrates that the storm’s impact was not limited to just one vessel.

Symbolism and spiritual lessons:

  • Jesus as the center of the storm:The boat carrying Jesus and His disciples encountered a severe storm, which symbolizes the storms of life that believers may face. It is a reminder that even when we are in the presence of Jesus, storms may arise. However, we can find peace and security in Him.
  • Jesus’ authority over creation:In this passage, Jesus demonstrates His authority not only over the storm but also over the forces of nature. His ability to rebuke the wind and calm the sea reveals His divine power as the Creator of all things. This highlights His deity and the fact that nothing is beyond His control.
  • The disciples’ fear and faith:The disciples, despite being experienced fishermen who had likely faced storms before, were filled with fear. This reaction is natural, but it also reveals their lack of faith and trust in Jesus. It serves as a reminder that even in the face of daunting circumstances, we are called to have faith in Christ’s ability to guide us through the storms of life.
  • Trust in Jesus’ presence:Though Jesus was asleep in the boat during the storm, He was present with the disciples. His physical presence in the boat with them should have reassured them of His care and protection. Similarly, in our own lives, we can find comfort in knowing that Jesus is always present with us, even in the midst of life’s storms.

Application:

  • Trust in Jesus’ sovereignty:When faced with difficult circumstances, we should remember that Jesus is sovereign over all things. Just as He calmed the storm, He can bring peace to our lives. We should trust in His wisdom and power, even when things seem out of control.
  • Strengthening our faith:The disciples’ lack of faith serves as a reminder for us to nurture and strengthen our own faith in Jesus. We can do this through studying God’s Word, praying, and cultivating a personal relationship with Him. When our faith is strong, we can face life’s storms with confidence, knowing that Jesus is with us.
  • Seeking solitude and rest:Jesus sought moments of solitude to be alone with His disciples and commune with God. In our busy lives, it is essential to set aside time for rest, reflection, and prayer. By doing so, we can deepen our relationship with God and find renewed strength to face life’s challenges.
