Mark 4:35

Posted on 18 May at 14:48

“And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on

Verse: “And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.” (Mark 4:35, KJV)

Context:In Mark 4:35, Jesus and His disciples are traveling by boat across the Sea of Galilee. Jesus had just finished teaching a crowd using parables, including the well-known parable of the sower. This verse marks the beginning of a significant event known as the calming of the storm.

Literal Meaning:Jesus suggests to His disciples that they should cross over to the other side of the sea. His statement is straightforward and indicates His intention to move to a different location.

Symbolism and Spiritual Meaning:a. Transition and Journey: The act of passing over to the other side holds symbolic significance. It represents a transition or journey from one place to another. In a broader sense, it can also symbolize a transition in our lives, moving from one season to another or from one spiritual state to another.

b. Faith and Obedience: By suggesting they pass over to the other side, Jesus demonstrates His authority and the disciples’ need to trust in Him. Their response to Jesus’ instruction requires faith and obedience. Similarly, in our spiritual lives, we are called to have faith in God’s guidance and obey His commands, even when faced with uncertainties.

c. Storms and Trials: The events that follow this verse involve a great storm that threatens to sink the boat. This storm symbolizes the trials and challenges we encounter in life. Just as the disciples faced a literal storm, we too face various storms, including difficulties, hardships, and temptations. Jesus’ response to the storm teaches us important lessons about His power and presence in the midst of our trials.

Application and Lessons:a. Trusting God’s Guidance: Jesus’ words remind us of the importance of trusting God’s guidance in our lives. He knows the path we should take, and even when it seems uncertain or challenging, we can rely on His wisdom and direction.

b. Faith in the Midst of Storms: The storm that arises in the following verses highlights the reality of trials in our lives. It’s crucial to remember that even in the midst of storms, Jesus is with us. He has the power to calm the storms and bring peace to our hearts. We should trust Him and have faith that He will see us through every trial we face.

c. Obedience to God’s Word: The disciples’ response to Jesus’ instruction to pass over to the other side required obedience. Similarly, our journey of faith requires obedience to God’s Word. When we follow His commands and trust in Him, He will guide us safely to the other side of any challenge or trial we encounter.

d. Recognizing Jesus’ Authority: Jesus’ authority over the natural elements, demonstrated in calming the storm, reveals His divine power. As we study this passage, it reminds us of Jesus’ sovereignty over all things, and we should acknowledge His authority in our lives, surrendering to His will and trusting in His ability to bring us through any situation.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and explore further to gain a deeper understanding of the passage. Bible study is a wonderful way to delve into God’s Word and discover its timeless truths and applications in our lives.
