Mark 6:9

Posted on 18 May at 14:47

“But be shod with sandals; and not put on two coats.”

Context:Mark 6:9 is part of a passage where Jesus is giving instructions to His disciples as He sends them out on a mission to preach and heal. He instructs them to go out in pairs and gives them specific guidelines regarding their attire and provisions.

Key Points and Lessons:

Simplicity and Trust in God’s Provision:In this verse, Jesus tells His disciples not to wear two coats but to be content with one. Similarly, He instructs them to wear sandals rather than extra footwear. These instructions emphasize simplicity and trust in God’s provision. Jesus wanted His disciples to rely on God’s faithfulness and not to be burdened with excessive material possessions. This principle reminds us to prioritise our trust in God’s provision rather than accumulating unnecessary possessions or relying solely on our own resources.

Dependence on God’s Mission:By instructing the disciples to go out with minimal provisions, Jesus was teaching them to rely on God’s guidance and providence. He wanted them to learn to depend on Him as they fulfilled the mission He had given them. This principle reminds us that when we are obedient to God’s call and step out in faith, He will provide for our needs and enable us to accomplish the tasks He has set before us.

Focus on the Mission:Jesus’ instructions also highlight the importance of focusing on the mission rather than being preoccupied with material concerns. The disciples were not to be distracted by unnecessary preparations but were to prioritise proclaiming the message of the kingdom and ministering to people’s needs. This principle encourages us to maintain a laser-like focus on fulfilling God’s purposes in our lives, seeking first His kingdom and righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

Faithful Stewardship:In asking the disciples to carry only the essentials, Jesus emphasised the principle of faithful stewardship. He wanted them to understand the importance of wisely managing the resources entrusted to them. By travelling light, they could be more agile in their ministry and focus on the task at hand. This teaches us the value of being good stewards of the resources God has given us, including our time, talents, and possessions.

  • Application:As we reflect on Mark 6:9, we can apply these principles to our own lives as followers of Christ. We should cultivate simplicity, trusting in God’s provision rather than becoming overly attached to material possessions. We are called to rely on God’s guidance and providence as we fulfil His mission for our lives, understanding that He will supply what we need. We must also maintain a laser-like focus on the mission, avoiding distractions that hinder our effectiveness in serving God and others. Lastly, we are encouraged to be faithful stewards of all that God has entrusted to us, using our resources wisely for His purposes.
