Mark 7:23

All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Mark 7:23 (KJV)

This verse concludes Jesus’ teaching in a passage where He confronts the Pharisees and scribes about their focus on external rituals and traditions while neglecting the condition of their hearts. Jesus emphasizes that it is not what enters a person from the outside that defiles them but what comes from within, from the heart. The preceding verses (Mark 7:14-22) establish this context, where Jesus explains that evil thoughts, words, and actions all take their rise from the inward parts of a person.

Jesus states that evil things come from within and defile a person. This emphasizes the importance of examining the condition of our hearts and dealing with the inner attitudes and motivations that can lead to sinful actions. The term “evil things” refers to sinful thoughts, intentions, attitudes, and desires that can manifest in various actions. Our actions are a reflection of what is in our hearts. The heart is described as the fountain from which all these impure streams flow. These evils are not primarily the result of imitation or the mere effect of example from others; external example may draw out the evil that is already within, but it does not produce it there. The verse affirms that the inward part of man is sinful and polluted prior to the commission of these evil acts. The source of this inward pollution is identified as the fruit of original sin, a consequence of Adam’s transgression, resulting in a corrupt nature. The verse’s conclusion, “and defile the man,” emphasizes that these internal evils are what truly make a person unclean, rather than any external factor.

Matthew 15:19-20 records Jesus’ parallel teaching, reinforcing that evil thoughts and actions originate in the heart and defile a person. Proverbs 4:23 urges the reader to guard the heart because it is the wellspring of life, while Jeremiah 17:9 describes the heart as deceitful above all things. These passages together affirm the biblical teaching that the heart is the source of moral and spiritual defilement.

  • Examine your own heart and motives. Are there any sinful attitudes or desires that need to be addressed? Pray and ask God for His guidance and help in transforming your heart to be aligned with His will.

  • Consider the importance of genuine inward transformation rather than merely focusing on outward religious practices. Our relationship with God should involve a sincere heart and a desire to live a life that honours Him.

  • Reflect on how you can guard your heart against evil influences. This may involve being discerning about the media you consume, the company you keep, and the choices you make on a daily basis.

  • Read about the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23, which highlights the transformation that occurs in the life of a believer as they walk with God.

Remember, the purpose of a Bible study is not merely to gain knowledge but to allow the Word of God to transform our hearts and lives. Take time to meditate on the verse, seek God’s guidance, and apply His truths to your daily walk with Him.
