Mark 7:14

Listen to this article

“And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand.”

Context:And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand: Mark 7:14 (KJV)

This verse is part of a larger passage where Jesus addresses the crowd and teaches them about what truly defiles a person. In the preceding verses (Mark 7:1-13), the Pharisees and scribes criticized Jesus and his disciples for not observing certain ceremonial washings before eating, which they considered to be a violation of the tradition of the elders.

In response to their accusations, Jesus calls the people together and instructs them to listen and understand what He is about to say. This verse serves as an invitation to the crowd to pay attention and receive His teaching.

Key Points to Consider:

Authority of Jesus:By gathering the people and asking them to listen, Jesus assumes a position of authority. He wants everyone to recognize the importance of His words and the weight they carry.

Importance of Understanding:Jesus emphasizes the need for understanding. It’s not merely about hearing His words but also grasping their meaning. This call to understand implies a deeper engagement with His teachings rather than a superficial or casual hearing.

Relevance to the Previous Context:The context of this verse is crucial for understanding its significance. Jesus is addressing the criticism of the religious leaders and challenging their rigid interpretation of traditions. He is about to explain that what truly defiles a person is not external rituals but the condition of one’s heart.
