Mark 11:7

And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him.

Mark 11:7 (KJV)

This verse is the climactic moment of Jesus’ instructions to His disciples. He had sent two of them ahead to a village, telling them they would find a colt tied, on which no one had ever sat, and to bring it to Him. In verse 7, the disciples obey: they bring the colt to Jesus, cast their garments on it as a makeshift saddle, and Jesus sits on it. This action immediately prepares for the entry into Jerusalem that follows.

The verse emphasizes Jesus’ deliberate, sovereign orchestration of events. He knew exactly where the colt would be, and His instructions were fulfilled precisely. The colt, never having been ridden, was set apart for this sacred purpose. The disciples’ act of placing their garments on the colt was a practical service of honor, preparing the animal for the King. Jesus’ choice of a young colt, rather than a grand horse or chariot, demonstrates His humility and meekness. By sitting on the colt, Jesus presented Himself as the Messiah, the promised King of Israel, visually representing His authority and kingship.

The garments cast on the colt echo the crowd’s later action in Mark 11:8, where they spread their garments and branches on the road, acknowledging Jesus’ royal status. This event also fulfils the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9, which describes a humble king coming to Jerusalem riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. The parallel account in Matthew 21:7 mentions both the donkey and the colt, while Mark focuses solely on the colt, highlighting the specific animal Jesus rode.

  • Humility and Servanthood: Jesus’ choice of a humble means of transportation teaches us the importance of humility and servanthood. As followers of Christ, we should imitate His example and approach others with humility, considering their needs above our own.

  • Surrendering to Jesus: The disciples’ act of casting their garments on the colt illustrates the need for surrender and submission to Jesus’ authority in our lives. We should be willing to lay down our own agendas, desires, and possessions at His feet, recognising Him as our Lord and King.

  • Fulfilment of Prophecy: This event serves as a reminder that God fulfils His Word and His plans are brought to pass in His perfect timing. We can trust in the reliability of God’s promises.

  • Recognising Jesus’ Kingship: Just as the colt was a visible sign of Jesus’ kingship, we must acknowledge and honour Jesus as the rightful King over our lives. We should live in a manner that reflects His lordship, recognising His authority and submitting to His will.

The disciples’ obedience in bringing the colt models faithful service in preparing the way for Jesus. Their simple act of casting garments was both practical and symbolic, honouring the King who came in humility. As we consider this verse, we are invited to prepare our own hearts for Jesus, laying down what we have in service to Him, and recognising His rightful place as our King.
