Mark 11:7

Mark 11:7 (KJV):

This verse is part of the account of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, which is recorded in Mark 11:1-11. Jesus and His disciples were nearing Jerusalem, specifically Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives. He sent two of His disciples ahead, instructing them to find a colt tied, which no one had ever ridden, and to bring it to Him. This is the background leading up to verse 7.

In Mark 11:7, we see the fulfilment of Jesus’ instructions to the two disciples. They found the colt, brought it to Jesus, and placed their garments on it as a makeshift saddle. The purpose was to prepare the colt for Jesus to ride into Jerusalem.

Humility:Jesus, as the Son of God, could have chosen a grand entrance, riding a majestic horse or chariot. Instead, He chose a young colt, demonstrating humility and meekness. This is significant as it fulfils the prophecy from Zechariah 9:9, which states that the King would come riding on a donkey, a symbol of peace and humility.

The Messianic King:The act of sitting on the colt indicated Jesus’ identification as the Messiah, the promised King of Israel. It was a visual representation of His authority and kingship. By sitting on the colt, Jesus presented Himself as the rightful ruler who fulfils Old Testament prophecies.

A Picture of Service:The disciples’ action of casting their garments on the colt showed their recognition and submission to Jesus’ authority. This act symbolises their willingness to serve Jesus and their acknowledgement that Jesus is the one deserving honour and respect.

• Humility and Servanthood:Jesus’ choice of a humble means of transportation teaches us the importance of humility and servanthood. As followers of Christ, we should imitate His example and approach others with humility, considering their needs above our own.
• Surrendering to Jesus:The disciples’ act of casting their garments on the colt illustrates the need for surrender and submission to Jesus’ authority in our lives. We should be willing to lay down our own agendas, desires, and possessions at His feet, recognising Him as our Lord and King.
• Fulfilment of Prophecy:This event showcases the fulfilment of prophecies concerning the Messiah. It serves as a reminder of the reliability and faithfulness of God’s promises. We can trust that God fulfils His Word and His plans are brought to pass in His perfect timing.
• Recognising Jesus’ Kingship:Just as the colt was a visible sign of Jesus’ kingship, we must acknowledge and honour Jesus as the rightful King over our lives. We should live in a manner that reflects His lordship, recognising His authority and submitting to His will.
