Mark 15:42

Posted on 18 May at 14:42
Listen to this article

“And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath”

Context:Mark 15:42 is part of the narrative surrounding the crucifixion and burial of Jesus Christ. It occurs after Jesus’ death on the cross and before His resurrection. In this verse, it describes the timing of the events as evening approaches, noting that it was the day of preparation before the Sabbath.

The Day of Preparation:The phrase “the preparation” refers to the day before the Sabbath, when the Jewish people would make necessary arrangements and preparations in order to observe the Sabbath day of rest (Saturday). It was customary for the Jews to complete their work and ensure everything was in order before the Sabbath began at sundown. This particular preparation day mentioned in Mark 15:42 falls on a Friday, just before the Sabbath.

Observance of the Sabbath:The Sabbath is a sacred day in Judaism, commanded by God in the Old Testament (Exodus 20:8-11; Deuteronomy 5:12-15). It is a day of rest, dedicated to worship and reflection, during which no work is to be done. In observing the Sabbath, Jews abstain from ordinary labor and focus on spiritual activities, studying the Torah, attending synagogue services, and spending time with family.

Significance of the Timing:Mark 15:42 highlights the precise timing of Jesus’ burial, emphasizing that it occurred just before the Sabbath began. This detail is significant because Jewish law required bodies to be properly buried before sundown on the same day of their death. If Jesus’ burial had been delayed beyond the Sabbath’s commencement, it would have been in violation of Jewish customs and beliefs. Additionally, the timing emphasizes the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies regarding Jesus as the Messiah (Isaiah 53:9).

Symbolism and Spiritual Application:The day of preparation and Jesus’ burial on that day hold symbolic meaning. Jesus’ death and burial marked the completion of His redemptive work on the cross. Just as the preparation day was a time of anticipation and readiness for the Sabbath, Jesus’ burial represented a temporary cessation before the glorious resurrection on the third day, which would occur after the Sabbath. This teaches us that God’s timing is perfect, and He fulfills His promises in His appointed time.

  • Application to our Lives:Mark 15:42 reminds us of the importance of honoring God’s commands and observing times of rest and worship. It encourages us to set aside dedicated periods for spiritual renewal, reflection, and drawing closer to God. Additionally, it highlights the significance of Jesus’ sacrificial death and subsequent resurrection as the central event in the Christian faith, which brings forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life to all who believe in Him.

In summary, Mark 15:42 captures the timing and significance of Jesus’ burial, taking place on the day of preparation before the Sabbath. It underscores the fulfillment of prophecies, symbolizes the completion of Jesus’ redemptive work, and teaches us about God’s perfect timing. Furthermore, it encourages us to honor times of rest and worship in our own lives and embrace the profound meaning of Jesus’ death and resurrection for our salvation.
