Mark 15:43
“Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.”
Context:Mark 15:43 is part of the narrative of Jesus’ crucifixion and burial. At this point, Jesus had been crucified and died on the cross. Joseph of Arimathaea, described as an honorable counselor who waited for the kingdom of God, approached Pilate, the Roman governor, to request permission to take Jesus’ body.
Joseph of Arimathaea:Joseph of Arimathaea is mentioned in all four Gospel accounts as the person who took responsibility for Jesus’ burial. He is described as an honourable or respected member of the Jewish council (Sanhedrin). Joseph was also a follower of Jesus, though his discipleship was secret for fear of the Jewish leaders (John 19:38).
The Kingdom of God:The mention of Joseph as someone who “waited for the kingdom of God” highlights his faith and expectation of the coming Messianic kingdom. The concept of the kingdom of God is a central theme throughout the New Testament, referring to God’s reign and rule over all creation, established through the work of Jesus Christ.
Boldness and Courage:Mark notes that Joseph “went in boldly unto Pilate” to request Jesus’ body. This demonstrates Joseph’s courage and determination to honour Jesus in His death. It was a bold move for a member of the Jewish council to approach a Roman authority, especially since Jesus had been condemned and crucified as a criminal.
Requesting Jesus’ Body:Joseph’s request to Pilate was to obtain Jesus’ body for burial. The Jewish custom was to bury the deceased before sundown, and Joseph desired to give Jesus a proper burial rather than leaving Him on the cross. This act of compassion and reverence for Jesus’ body aligns with Jewish burial traditions and displays Joseph’s devotion to Jesus.
