Mark 16:19

So then after the Lord had spoken vnto them, he was receiued vp into heauen, and sate on the right hand of God. Mark 16:19 (KJV)

Mark 16:19 forms the climactic conclusion of the Gospel of Mark. It follows the narrative of the resurrection, in which the women who came to the tomb found it empty and were told by an angel that Jesus had risen (Mark 16:1-8). After his resurrection, Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene (Mark 16:9-11), to two disciples walking in the country (Mark 16:12-13), and finally to the eleven apostles (Mark 16:14). In the preceding verses, He gave the Great Commission (Mark 16:15-18), urging the disciples to preach the Gospel to all creation and promising signs to accompany believers.

The verse itself records that after Jesus had spoken to His disciples, He was “received up into heaven.” This language signifies His ascension into the presence of God the Father. The phrase “sat on the right hand of God” conveys His exalted position and authority, symbolizing His divine nature and equal standing with God.

Theologically, the ascension is a pivotal event. It affirms Jesus’ victory over sin and death and the fulfillment of His earthly mission. By taking His rightful place at the right hand of God, He demonstrates both authority and an intercessory role on behalf of believers (Hebrews 4:14-16). The ascension also points forward to His promised second coming in glory (Acts 1:11).

In summary, Mark 16:19 underscores the completion of Jesus’ earthly ministry, His divine authority, and His ongoing mediatorial role between God and humanity. It serves as a bridge between the resurrection appearances and the future hope of Christ’s return, inviting believers to trust in His finished work and to carry forward the mission entrusted to them.
