Mark 16:19

So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

Mark 16:19 (KJV)

Mark 16:19 concludes the Gospel of Mark with the ascension and exaltation of the Lord Jesus. The verse follows the resurrection narrative and the appearances of the risen Christ to His followers. In the preceding verses, He gave the Great Commission (Mark 16:15-18), urging the disciples to preach the Gospel to all creation.

The verse records that after Jesus had spoken to His disciples, He was “received up into heaven.” This language signifies His ascension into the presence of God the Father. The phrase “sat on the right hand of God” conveys His exalted position and authority, symbolizing His divine nature and equal standing with God. Sitting at the right hand of God signifies both rest—His work of redemption was complete—and rule—He took possession of His kingdom. The title “Lord” is notably used for Jesus in this context, marking His glorious ascension and its fruits.

The ascension is a pivotal event in Christian theology. It affirms Jesus’ victory over sin and death and the fulfillment of His earthly mission. By taking His rightful place at the right hand of God, He demonstrates both authority and an intercessory role on behalf of believers (Hebrews 4:14-16). This verse echoes Psalm 110:1, where the Lord sits at the right hand of God, and is later referenced in Acts 2:33.

The disciples were not immediately taken to heaven; there was work for them to do on earth, so Christ alone ascended. The following verse (Mark 16:20) shows the result: the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them, confirming the word with accompanying signs. Mark 16:19 underscores the completion of Jesus’ earthly ministry, His divine authority, and His ongoing mediatorial role between God and humanity. It invites believers to trust in His finished work and to carry forward the mission entrusted to them.

Jesus is now glorified with the glory He had before the world, and all that God does for us is through His Son. The ascended Lord reigns with sovereign dignity and universal power, and believers can rest in His completed work while actively serving Him on earth.
