Luke 1:55

As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for euer. Luke 1:55 (KJV)

This verse concludes Mary’s song, the Magnificat, which she proclaimed when she visited her relative Elizabeth after receiving the news that she would conceive and bear the Son of God, Jesus Christ. The song, recorded in Luke 1:46‑55, is a beautiful expression of gratitude and joy, centered on God’s faithfulness, mercy, and the fulfillment of His promises.

In Luke 1:55 Mary celebrates the faithfulness of God who has kept His word to the ancestors of Israel. She acknowledges that the promises spoken to “our fathers” and to Abraham are being fulfilled in the birth of the Messiah. Throughout the Old Testament God made covenants with Abraham, promising numerous descendants, the possession of the land of Canaan, and that through one of his offspring all nations would be blessed.

The reference to “his seed for ever” points to the eternal nature of that covenant. Mary affirms that God’s promise extends beyond a single generation to an everlasting reign, embodied in Jesus Christ, the ultimate fulfillment of the promises made to Abraham. This seed is not only the Savior of Israel but also the hope and salvation for all peoples across all generations.

Thus Luke 1:55 highlights two central themes: the steadfast faithfulness of God and the realization of His covenantal promises in the person of Jesus. Mary’s words demonstrate her deep trust in God’s plan and her gratitude for being chosen to play a role in it.
