Luke 2:18

Posted on 18 May at 14:42
Listen to this article

“And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.”

Context:Luke 2:18 is part of the narrative of Jesus’ birth. In the preceding verses, an angel appeared to shepherds in the field, announcing the birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ. The shepherds then went to see the baby Jesus and spread the word about what they had witnessed.

Wonder and Amazement:The verse begins with the phrase, “And all they that heard it wondered.” The birth of Jesus was an extraordinary event, and the news brought by the shepherds amazed those who heard it. The word “wondered” indicates a sense of awe, marvel, or astonishment. This reaction is understandable since the birth of the Messiah was a fulfillment of ancient prophecies and held great significance for the Jewish people.

The Testimony of the Shepherds:The shepherds were the first to receive the news of Jesus’ birth directly from the angel. They not only heard about it but also witnessed the heavenly host praising God. They responded by going to Bethlehem and finding Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus, just as they were told. Their testimony carried weight and impacted those who heard it. The shepherds’ testimony serves as a reminder that God often chooses ordinary people to proclaim His extraordinary message.

The Impact:The verse concludes with the phrase, “which were told them by the shepherds.” The people who heard the shepherds’ account of the angelic announcement and their visit to see the newborn Jesus were impacted by what they heard. The news of the Messiah’s birth spread, causing wonder and discussion among those who heard it. This demonstrates the power of personal testimony and how it can influence others to seek and understand God’s work in their lives.

Key Takeaway:

Luke 2:18 highlights the wonder and amazement that surrounded the birth of Jesus. The shepherds’ testimony of the angelic announcement and their visit to see Jesus impacted those who heard it, sparking curiosity and discussion. This verse encourages us to share our own encounters with God and His work in our lives, knowing that our testimonies can have a profound effect on others and draw them closer to Jesus.

Note: It’s essential to read and study the Bible in its entirety to gain a comprehensive understanding of God’s Word.
