Luke 2:19

Listen to this article

“But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.”

Context:In Luke 2:1-20, we read about the birth of Jesus. The angel appeared to the shepherds and announced the good news of the Savior’s birth. The shepherds went to see the baby, and after witnessing this incredible event, they shared what they had seen and heard. Verse 19 specifically focuses on Mary’s reaction to these events.

Mary’s Response:The verse highlights Mary’s response to the shepherds’ testimony. Instead of reacting outwardly or sharing the news with others, Mary “kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.” This phrase reveals Mary’s deep reflection and contemplation of the extraordinary events surrounding Jesus’ birth.

Significance of Mary’s Response:Mary’s response teaches us several important lessons:

a. Silence and Contemplation: Mary’s response encourages us to embrace moments of silence and contemplation. In our fast-paced world, taking time to reflect on God’s work in our lives is essential. Just as Mary pondered the events, we should meditate on God’s goodness, faithfulness, and providence.

b. Trust and Faith: Mary’s contemplation demonstrates her trust and faith in God. She didn’t fully understand the significance of everything happening around her, but she held onto faith and trust in God’s plan. Similarly, we should trust in God’s ways and purposes, even when we don’t have all the answers or when circumstances seem unclear.

c. Humility and Submission: Mary’s response also reveals her humility and submission to God’s will. Despite being chosen as the mother of the Messiah, she didn’t boast or seek recognition. Instead, she humbly accepted her role and entrusted herself to God’s plan. This teaches us to cultivate humility and submit to God’s will in our lives.

Application:As we reflect on Mary’s response, we can apply the following principles to our own lives:

  • Take time for reflection:Make a habit of setting aside quiet moments to reflect on God’s faithfulness, goodness, and blessings in your life.
  • Cultivate trust and faith:Even in uncertain times, choose to trust in God’s sovereignty and His plans for your life.
  • Embrace humility and submission:Seek to humbly submit to God’s will, recognizing that His plans are higher than our own.
  • Share your experiences:While Mary kept these things in her heart, there will be times when God calls us to share our experiences with others. When appropriate, testify to God’s work in your life, allowing others to be encouraged and inspired.
