“And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.”

Context:And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Luke 6:20 (KJV)

Luke 6:20 (KJV) is part of a larger section known as the "Sermon on the Plain" or the "Beatitudes," where Jesus teaches His disciples and the multitude gathered around them. In this verse, Jesus specifically addresses His disciples, emphasizing the blessedness of the poor and promising them the kingdom of God.

Jesus’ attention to His disciples:The verse begins by noting that Jesus lifted up His eyes on His disciples. This highlights His intentionality in directing His teaching towards His closest followers. It signifies that Jesus is about to impart a significant lesson to His disciples.

The blessedness of the poor:Jesus declares, "Blessed be ye poor." The term "poor" here refers not only to those who lack material possessions but also to those who are spiritually humble, recognizing their need for God. Jesus uses the term "blessed" to convey a state of spiritual well-being and happiness. This verse challenges conventional notions of wealth and emphasizes the importance of spiritual riches and dependence on God.

The promise of the kingdom of God:Jesus affirms that the kingdom of God belongs to the poor. The "kingdom of God" refers to God’s reign and rule in the hearts of His people. It represents the realm where God’s will is fulfilled, where righteousness, peace, and joy abound. Jesus assures His disciples that, despite their present circumstances of poverty and humility, they have an inheritance in God’s kingdom.

The message behind Luke 6:20 is multi-layered. It teaches us that our true wealth and blessedness are not determined by material possessions but by our relationship with God. The poor, both materially and spiritually, are not forgotten or abandoned by God. On the contrary, they are recipients of God’s blessings and heirs of His kingdom. This verse encourages disciples of Jesus to prioritize the pursuit of spiritual treasures and to trust in God’s provision and guidance.

As you continue to explore the surrounding verses and the entirety of Jesus’ teachings in the Sermon on the Plain, you’ll find additional insights and teachings that further illuminate the significance of this verse.
