Luke 6:19

Listen to this article

“And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.”

Context:The verse is part of the Gospel of Luke, which presents the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. In this particular passage, Jesus had just chosen His twelve apostles and went down to a level place where a great multitude had gathered to hear Him and be healed.

Seeking Jesus:The verse begins with “And the whole multitude sought to touch him.” The people were eager to get close to Jesus because they recognized something extraordinary about Him. They sought Him out because they believed that He had the power to heal and transform their lives. This shows their faith and desperation for a touch from the Lord.

Virtue going out of Jesus:The verse continues, “for there went virtue out of him.” The word “virtue” in this context refers to power, specifically the divine power or life force that emanated from Jesus. His presence was so potent that it had a healing and transformative effect on those who came into contact with Him.

Healing them all:The verse concludes, “and healed them all.” This statement emphasizes the incredible healing ministry of Jesus. Regardless of the nature or severity of their ailments, Jesus had the power to heal everyone who came to Him. His compassion, love, and divine authority brought restoration and wholeness to countless individuals.

  • The multitude’s desire to touch Jesus reflects their recognition of His unique power and authority. It highlights the importance of seeking a personal encounter with Him.
  • The “virtue” that went out of Jesus suggests that His healing power and authority were not limited to His physical touch alone. Even a mere touch of His garment (as seen in other Gospel accounts) was enough to bring about healing.

The verse showcases Jesus’ unlimited ability to heal. His healing ministry was all-encompassing, addressing both physical and spiritual needs. This demonstrates His divine nature and the extent of His love and compassion for humanity.

  • Like the multitude, we should seek Jesus with faith and anticipation, believing in His power to heal and transform our lives.
  • We can approach Jesus in prayer, seeking His touch and His presence. Through faith, we can experience His healing power in our physical, emotional, and spiritual lives.
  • As followers of Christ, we are called to extend His healing touch to others. We can be vessels of His love and compassion, reaching out to those in need and pointing them to the ultimate source of healing, Jesus Christ.

Remember to consider the broader context of Luke 6 and explore the surrounding verses for a comprehensive understanding of the passage. May this Bible study deepen your appreciation for the healing ministry of Jesus and inspire you to seek Him in all areas of your life.
