Luke 7:24
And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
Luke 7:24 (KJV)
Context
John the Baptist, while imprisoned, had sent messengers to ask Jesus, “Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?” (Luke 7:19-20). After the messengers departed, Jesus spoke to the crowd about John. He did not flatter John in his presence but affirmed his significance openly, using a rhetorical question that pointed to John’s steadfast character.
Meaning
Jesus asked, “What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?” The wilderness was where John began his ministry (Matthew 3:1), a place away from the comforts and distractions of cities. A reed shaken by the wind is fragile, easily swayed, and commonplace. Jesus’ question implies that the crowds did not go out to see a weak or unstable man. Instead, they went to hear a prophet, and John was more than a prophet (Luke 7:26). The metaphor contrasts John’s unwavering commitment to his divine calling with the image of a person lacking conviction.
Biblical connections
The parallel account in Matthew 11:7 records the same event and wording, confirming the historical reliability of the episode.
Application
Luke 7:24 reminds us of the importance of strong and unwavering leadership. John was not swayed by popular opinion or the changing winds of culture. He faithfully fulfilled his calling as the forerunner of the Messiah. Believers are encouraged to stand firm in their convictions, even when facing opposition or uncertainty.
Reflection
Jesus’ high regard for John challenges us to examine our own steadfastness. Are we like a reed shaken by the wind, or do we remain resolute in our faith and calling? John’s example inspires us to serve God with boldness and integrity, regardless of circumstances.
